GHOSTING
What is Ghosting?
While this is a bit of a bait and switch, it would be a little more accurate to say “ghosting" or more scientifically known as “thermophoresis.”

Thermophoresis, "ghosting," for our purposes here, is the tendency for small particles in moving air to collect on cooler, therefore wetter, surfaces.
​
Many have seen these “ghosts” on the ceilings and walls of homes. They are often indicative of areas with no (or poor) insulation or where cold air is able to find its way between the wall/ceiling surface and the insulation. This is very common in homes with fiberglass insulation. It will also show up in well insulated walls and partially insulated ceilings where the studs ceiling joists are the “poorly insulated part. This results in the clear outline of the studs, joists and even the nail heads.
How can painting your Ceiling Help with a Ghosting problem?
As we mentioned before, Ghosting is an Insulation Problem, not a painting issue. With that being said, there are things that we can do to help the problem.

The first step is to apply a coat of an oil primer. This will help to block any stains from bleeding through. The next step would be to apply a high quality coat of a flat ceiling paint. This will make your home look fresh and new again.

With all of this being said, please keep in mind that this issue may come back years into the future, as it is an insulation problem, not a paint problem. But using good quality materials and the proper applications you will not see that problem for a long time to come.
